April 21-24

In Music the children will pretend to be fireflies and will practice moving slowly to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.9 in E Flat Major and quickly to Mozart’s Horn Concerto No.3 in E Flat Major with little lights. We will begin to learn the words to “Glow Little Glowworm”. In Science we will read about Fireflies/Lightning Bugs and learn that they are very special beetles. We will begin to read about Perching Birds in our Christian Liberty Nature Reader. We will learn about the Quail. Our field trip to Casa Manana for the production of Peter Pan is planned for this Thursday, April 24. Please turn in the permission slip and $8.00 by Wednesday, April 23. We will depart from the school at 9:30 (meet at 9:15). We will return to the school for lunch after the play. We only have tickets for a small number of adults (Kim Walker has info.).

April 14-17

In Nature Study the children will visit the playground with magnifying glasses and search for beetles. In Music we will sing and play “Peter Rabbit Comes to My House” and “McGregor’s Garden”. In Art the children will create little bunnies to use for songs and fingerplays. They will also draw and use stickers to create special seasonal cards. We are planning to make our own dye using coffee, beet juice, onion skins and other natural substances. Please send your child’s basket and 12 filled plastic eggs for hiding (please secure them with tape so that they won’t fall apart outside). We will hunt at 3:00 and eat after the hunt.

April 7-10

Last week the children witnessed the metamorphosis of our pupa and were very excited when the adult beetle emerged from the pupa exoskeleton. This week we will observe the exploratory behavior of our beetle and discuss it in circle. Noah’s father will share the Torah Scroll with us on Tuesday that he is planning to take to Belgium. In Nature Study the children will practice sketching a Geranium for their Nature Journals this week. In Art the children will create and decorate Easter egg picture frames. We will read Sarah Morton’s Day (a day in the life of a pilgrim girl) as we prepare for our field trip to the Log Cabin Village this Thursday. Please bring a lunch in a lunchbox with a cold pack. We are planning to have a picnic at Trinity Park after our visit to the Log Cabin Village. Please return your field trip permission slip with $3.00 admission by Wednesday. We will meet at the school at 8:45 and depart at 9:00.

March 31-April 3

In Science we will read “A Hummingbird” from our Christian Liberty Nature Reader as we observe a small Hummingbird nest that was collected by Dr. Flint. In Nature Study we are planning to observe the lifecycle of the Tenebrio beetle. In Social Studies we will begin to read Through The Wilderness (about Lewis and Clark). Our field trip will be to the Log Cabin Village on April 10. We will meet at 8:45 and leave at 9:00. The cost is $3.00 for adults and children. We are also planning to visit Trinity Park after the Village and have a picnic lunch.

March 24-27

We will be reading “The Tale of Samuel Whiskers” this week. In Bible we will read Genesis 27-29 and act out the story “A Long Trip Alone for Jacob” with puppets. In Social Studies we are planning to read about Thomas Jefferson. We are in need of Perennials for our garden. If you would like to donate a Perennial for your child to plant, please drop it by the class this month. Please meet at the school at 8:45 on Thursday for our field trip to Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center. Your child will need to bring a lunch (a lunchbox with a cold pack is preferable). Please wear closed toed shoes and send a water bottle for the hike. Remember the wear sunscreen.

March 3-6

In Science we will read “Nesting”, “Homebuilders”, and “Types of Nests” in Exploring Creation. We will be planting Snap Peas into the garden. In Art we will begin a new Audubon picture study of a Ruby Red Throated Hummingbird. In Music we will practice rhythms with instruments as they learn to sing “Frog Went A-Courting” from “Birds, Beasts, Bugs, and Fishes” by Pete Seeger. Please send a jacket for your child each day.

January 27-30

In Science we will read the lifestyles of Pterosaurs and learn about how they fly. In Social Studies we will be learning about the early settlers in Plymouth Plantation. In Bible we will read about Honesty and talk about Self Control. We will also be coloring illustrations for our portfolios. We will be going to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday.Please turn in $6.50 for the field trip on Wednesday. We will be leaving the school at 8:30. There will be morning care for siblings who need to get dropped off early.

January 21-23

In Social Studies we will learn about New Amsterdam and read about Peter Stuyvesant. In Science we will learn about the Quetzalcoatlus, the largest of the Pteranodons. In Bible we will read “Wisdom at School” from A Child’s Book of Character Building. The guinea pigs will visit our classroom and we will practice gentleness with them. Our artwork will be displayed at Barnes and Noble this Thursday from 4 to 7. The children will recite “Nest Eggs” by Robert Louis Stevenson and sing a song. Please let us know whether you will be able to attend. We are planning a field trip on Wednesday, January 29th, to see “The Probably Untrue Story”, an interactive performance for children by The Dallas Symphony Orchestra (located at 2301 Flora Street). The admission price is $6.00 per person. The performance begins at 10.00.

Janurary 13-16

In Bible we will read “Faith at School” and “Faith at Play” from A Child’s Book of Character Building. In Social Studies we will learn about Henry Hudson, The Dutch in the New World, and The Plymouth Plantation. In Music we are learning “Oh, Susanna” and Gimme, Gimme Ice Cream”. In Science we will read “Types of Pterosaurs” in Exploring Creation and “Air, Water, and Solids”. We will do an experiment to compare sounds heard in the air and through water. The children will narrate from The “Tale of Squirrel Nutkin”.

January 10-13

Our Valentine Party will be this Thursday, February 13 from 3:00 to 3:30. Please send 18 Valentines marked with your child’s name to pass to friends. Please remember to bring the items for the party if you signed up in the hallway. We are planning to play “I Have a Valentine Just For You”, “Heart to My Friend”, and “Who Was So Kind?” and “Friend of Mine” in Music. In Social Studies we will play Knicker Box and blow bubbles as we learn about the children of the early settlers. In Science we will continue to read about insects, and learn that they are cold-blooded. We will place an insect in a cold environment and how he is affected. We will also learn about exoskeletons and molting. In Bible we will learn about God’s love for us as we read from Matthew 13 about the mustard seed and from Genesis 24 and 25 about Isaac and Rebekah.

January 6-9

In Science we will learn about Flying Reptiles and read about Pterosaurs in Exploring Creation.We are planning to play a hearing lotto game called “Animal Sounds”. In Social Studies we will read “Strangers and Saints in Plymouth” from The Story of the World. In Bible we will read from Matthew 14 and learn about how Peter’s lack of faith prevented him from walking on water. In Music we will sing “Gimme, Gimme Ice Cream” and learn the signs for the words.
