February 13-16

In Art the children enjoyed decorating hearts to hang in the hallway. They also had fun making valentine cards for their family and creating their own mailbox to put their valentines in from their classmates.
In Science we will be painting a picture of a Aragonite. Aragonite forms in hot-springs, caves, and sedimentary deposits.
In Writing some of the students will be reviewing I in cursive and begin practicing to trace and write cursive J, K, and L. Other students will continue to practice tracing and writing words with short or long vowels.
In Bible will be reading from Joshua 13-24 about Joshua “Making a Home” .
School will be closed next Monday, February 20th for President’s Day.

February 6-9

The children enjoyed planting cabbage and onions in the garden last week. This week they will be painting a picture of onions for their nature journals.
In History this week we will be learning about Cyrus the Great from The Story of the World. The children will also be coloring a picture of Cyrus the Great.
We will begin making candles this week to go along with the “Douglas Mountain” song about “trimming the wicks”.
In Bible the children will be narrating about the Gibbonites from Joshua 9. We will also read about conquering Canaan.
Our Valentine Party will be on February 14 at 3:00. Please send 14 signed valentines for your child to sort into each holder. They don’t need to have the names of the children that they are for, but need to have them ready to pass.

January 30-Febuary 2

In Gardening/Nature Study the children will plant cabbage and onions in the garden. We will also paint a picture of the cabbage for our Nature Journals.
In Science we will plan on reading about sedimentary rocks and learn about Jasper. Jasper is a sedimentary rock and a type of fine grained quartz. It can be seen in red, yellow, green, or brown. The children will be observing a brown Jasper rock.
This Thursday, February 2nd we will be taking a field trip to the Planetarium at UTA. We will be leaving the school at 9:40. Please be sure to meet at the school by 9:30. The show will begin at 10:30.
In Social Studies we will read and illustrate “Ulysses and His Wind Bag” from Ancient Myths and Legends.
In Bible we will read and the children will narrate about the battle of Ai from Joshua 7.

January 23-26

In Science the children will be doing a picture study and painting the Tourmaline rock that we studied this month. We have enjoyed learning about different kinds of igneous rocks. We will begin learning about sedimentary rocks next week.
Next week we will be visiting the Planetarium at UTA on Febuary 2 at 10:30. Admission costs $4.00 for children and adults. Please turn in your money by Monday, January 30th.
In Social Studies we will be reading about “Mount Olympus and his Inhabitants” as well as painting a picture of Zeus and Hera. The children will learn that Zeus and Hera ruled Mount Olympus.
In Bible we will read “The Walls Fall Down” from The Bible in Pictures. This story is about the Walls of Jericho from Joshua 6: 1-20.
In Music the children will learn to do a line dance together called “The Boogie Walk”.

January 17-19

In Phonics/Spelling some of the students will be learning words with soft and hard c and g. We will also read words during circle time that have the long u sound.
In Writing some of the children will be practicing cursive letters Cc, Dd, and Ee. Please practice tracing and writing cursive lowercase a, b, and c at home.
In Social Studies we will be reading and narrating “Ulysses and the Cyclops” and painting a picture of the Cyclops. We will also read about the school days in Greece and learn about the Greek Alphabet. The children will be writing their own names using the Greek Alphabet.
In Bible we will read “Joshua’s Men are Helped by a Lady” (Joshua 2: 1-15) and “God Makes the River Stop Flowing (Joshua 3: 13-17).
In Music the children will use their snowflake wands they made with Creative Movement as we move to “Douglas Mountain” by Raffi.
