September 19-22

The children will be making their own cartouche using hieroglyphic symbols. A cartouche is a kind of nameplate that the Ancient Egyptians used for kings, queens, and other people in the kingdom. We will be reading Fun with Hieroglyphs by Catherine Roehrig. This rhyming book will teach symbols from A to Z as well as words and what they meant to the Egyptians.
We will begin learning to recite "The Moon" by Robert Louis Stevenson. A copy of the poem will be sent in their folders to practice at home.
Our Field Trip to River Legacy Science Center will be next Monday, September 26th. We will meet at the school at 8:50 and depart at 9:00. We will eat our lunches at the school when we get back from the field trip. Please bring the permission slip for the field trip to River Legacy Science Center by this Wednesday, September 21st. Be sure to turn in the $12.00 admission fee to Mrs. Hague. Let us know if you will be attending the field trip with your child.

September 12-15

We will begin learning about Egypt. The children will listen and narrate from the Boy of the Pyramids by Ruth Jones. The children will also paint a scene of a farmer using a shaduf (a machine used for watering crops). We will read Chapter 2 from The Story of the World about how Egyptians lived on the Nile River. The children will observe the Nile River on the map.
We will continue learning about the moon. The children will be narrating about Neil Armstrong and how he was the first man who walked on the moon. We will also learn about the Lunar Module, Moon Buggy, and Moon Rocks.
We will begin reading and narrating the Complete Winnie the Pooh stories. This week we will start reading "Pooh goes visiting and gets into a tight place".

September 6-8

In Nature Study the children will be observing and sketching the "Butterfly Weed". Their sketches will be put into thier own Nature Journals. We will also plant the weed into the butterfly garden to attract more butterflies.
In Science we will be studying about the different phases of the moon. We will be making our own phases of the moon wheels to take home.
In Music we will begin learning about the composor Frederic Chopin. The children will be moving fast and slow scarves to Chopin's "Nocturne in F, Op. 15".
In Social Studies we will begin reading about "The First Nomads" and "The First Nomads Become Farmers" from The Story of the World. The children will learn that the best places for nomads to live were in the area called the Fertile Crescent. This area was shaped like a crescent moon.
Please return daily take home folders in class each morning. We will be having snack time each afternoon. There will be a basket by the door where the children can drop their snack off in a baggy each morning. Please mark the snack with the child's name.
Hot lunches are available daily starting next Monday, September 12th. Please contact Tara Garr to order lunches in advance each month. Each child will receive a September lunch menu in their take home folder this week.
