Jan. 18-20

We will begin learning about China as we get ready to celebrate Chinese New Year. We will be having a Chinese Feast for Grandparents Day. There will be a sign-up sheet in the hall with items for the feast. Please sign up to bring 1 entree for 15 children and grandparents.
We are planning on celebrating Chinese New Year early this year so that we can share the celebration with our grandparents on Grandparents Day (Thursday, January 27th).
The children will be working on writing and illustrating the different kinds of weather to display in the hall. Students have also been painting and matching daytimes and nighttime pictures into the correct categories.
Some of the students will begin learning about adjectives. This week we will begin reading about the Five Senses and relate it to learning adjectives. We will talk about how our sense of smell and how sweet, sour, bitter, etc. are all examples of adjectives. Some of the students will be practicing writing lowercase and uppercase letters on lines. Other students will be practicing tracintg and writing cursive Dd and Ee on lines.

Jan. 10-13

In Science we will be talking about the different ways we use the sun and light. The children will paint pictures and add the last sequence of the event. Ex) Picture of a kid sunburned after sitting at the beach in the sun.
In Phonics some of the students will be reviewing verbs and practicing writing complete sentences using questions marks and periods. Others will be reviewing the soft and hard "g" sound. Ex) gem, jar. Students will give examples of nouns that start with j and g during circle time.
In Music the children will be playing a Listening Game. They will listen to a specific instrument and take turns matching the instrument cards to the correct sound of instrument that they hear.
In Math some of the students have been practicing time by the hour. Other students have been learning what each number is worth using minutes around the clock. Ex)1=5min. 2=10min. etc..
Don't forget to show your school spirit by wearing a Flint Academy shirt on Thursday to support our Basketball Players.

Jan. 3-6

We will continue our Unit on Weather. The students will practice sorting each season with the correct type of clothing. Ex) Winter-wear gloves, hat, scarf. We will also be observing the weather and drawing/writing about our favorite Season of the year.
Some of the students will be practicing words with long i. Others students will be reviewing short i. We will also learn the “ir” sound and review adding -ies,-es, and -s to words to make them plural.Ex) babies, churches, dolls.
Please take 5-10 minutes each evening to go over the Dolch flashcards/list with your child. It is important to learn and review these words each week in order to help your child be successful in reading and vocabulary.
For free art, some of the students enjoyed drawing their favorite event they did during the Christmas break. They enjoyed sharing it with their friends.
Please be sure to send a heavy jacket for the playground. It can be chilly during our morning recess time.
