March 22-25

In Nature/Gardening the children will be planting tomatoes and zucchini in the garden. We will use our sense of sight to see if there are any strawberries to ready to pick. The students enjoyed drawing the strawberry plant for their Nature journals.
In Sceince we will be learning about the Savannah Habitat. We will read a book called Memily, which is about a baby giraffe. We will also review the parts of a flower and read Stems and Roots and Leaves.
In Social Studies we will finish painting our United States Flags. We will also finish reading and narrating about Betsy Ross.
Some of the students will be practicing writing "y" in D' Nealian. The children will also sort objects that begin with the letter "y" and "w". We will also be reviewing and writing short vowel words in our Phonics/Rules Journal. other students will be cutting and pasting nouns on paper and writing sentences using adjectives and verbs. We will also begin learning about synonyms.
We are planning a Field Trip to Veteran's Park for a nature walk next Tuesday, March 30 at 9:30. Please fill out the attached permission slip and return it to Mrs. Hague by this Thursday. Please let us know if you would like to attend. Dr. Flint will be coming with us as well.
Our Easter Party will be next Thursday, April 1. Please bring 12 filled eggs (taped shut) for the hunt. The children will be making baskets for the hunt next week. Be sure to sign up to bring something for the party.

March 8-11

In Science we will be reading about all the animals that live on the Floor of the Rainforest. They will paint their own Anaconda. All of the animals and puzzle pieces they have been working on will be put together into a Rainforest pocket book.
We will be planting strawberries in the garden and creating texture collages to display in the hall.
In Social Studies we will be reading about how Betsy Ross sewed the flag of the United States. We'll be comparing the Texas flag to the United States flag. We will read F is for Flag and talk about how the United States flag has 13 stripes and 50 stars. The children will learn a song called, "Fifty Stars Are On Our Flag".
The children will be learning the different coin songs to help them remember the names of the coins. We will be practicing the Quarter song this week. A song sheet witht the words will be sent home this week.
Some of the students will be working on ending consonants. They will be reviewing the vowel digraphs "ai" and "ay". We will also be reviewing verbs and adjectives.
Other students will be working on reading short vowel stories and words that begin with the letter "w".
This Thursday, March 11 is Grandparent's Day. Dr. Flint is planning to speak from 2:00-2:30. The grandparents will join us in our class at 2:30 and the children will sing the Texas songs that we have learned and recite "The Swing" by Robert Louis Stevenson. Refreshments will be provided. Please let us know how many grandparents are planning to join us.

March 1-4

The children have enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year. We sampled Hello Panda cookies, Chinese noodles, Chinese fruit lollipops, White bean pastries, apples and mandarin oranges. They also had a wonderful time parading down the hall for the other classrooms using instruments and walking under the Chinese Dragon.
We will be reading the life of George Washingon. The children will be making their own George Washington. We will also read the Quarter book and talk about how George Washington is on the quarter. Students will be writing what they would do if they were the new President. They will also draw what their version of the flag would look like if they were President and explain it to the class.
In Science we will be reading about the Understory Layer of the Rainforest. We will leanr about the Jaguar and its habits. The children will be drawing their own jaguar and coloring the Understory layer with their colored pencils.
In Math some of the students will be counting by ones, tens, and hundreds. They will match or write the two-digit number. Other students will be subtracting with word problems. Please practice adding money using nickels, dimes and quarters.
In Music we will read and sing a Rainforest Rhyming Counting book. We will also be reading and learning "This Land is Your Land". Students will listen to the B-L-U-E songbook and learn how to spell the word.
