In Science we will read "Slowly, Slowly, Slowly," said the Sloth by Eric Carle and talk aout how the Sloth hangs upside down from trees. The students will be making the Emergent and Canopy Layer puzzle pieces of the rainforest.
In Social Studies the children have been practicing the Chinese song called "Zhao Pengyou" which means Looking for a Friend. Mrs. Worman (Laura's mother) who lived and taught in China for 12 years will play a game with students to go along with the song.
This week we will read Against the Odds, a story about Pandas. We will also paint a Chinese flag and make Mandarin hats.
We have also been working on recognizing numbers 1-100 on the 100's chart. Please be practicing these numbers at home each evening.
The children will be planting Pansies into a pot for our atrium. They will also observe and draw a pansy for our Nature Jouranal this week.
Feb. 16-18
In Social Studies this week we will be celebrating Chinese New Year and learning about their customs. We will be painting and decorating dragons and having a parade with a large dragon down the hall. We'll sample traditional food and play with little slide drums at our celebration on Thursday.
In Phonics we will be practicing words that begin with the letter "c". We will read Cathy Cook. Some of the students will be reviewing verbs and using am, are, is, has, have, does, and do. They will also begin learning what an adjective is.
We will be learning and listening to the words for the Y-E-L-L-O-W and W-H-I-T-E songs on the CD. Students will make their own songbooks to practice at home.
Please be sure to bring a heavy jacket for playground each day since the weather has been chilly. Be sure to remind your child to drop their snack in the basket each morning by the front of the classroom.
Open House is this Friday at 7:00. You will have the opportunity to look at your child's portfolio of work as well as listen to Dr. Flint speak about the Summer Program and information about Fall enrollment. Please let me know if you will be attending Open House.

Feb 8-11

This week we will learn about the animals that live in the Canopy Layer of the Rainforest. We will read about a Sloth and how it hangs from the trees.
In Art the children will be making their own Valentine soaps and Door Knob Hangers to take home.
In Bible we will read about Friends. We will also make Valentines Cards for our friends.
Some of the students will be practicing how to write a lowercase"d" this week. We will also practice words that begin and end with the letter "d". Other students will be reviewing plural -s and -es. They will learn how to change "y" to "i" and add -es such as "candies". We will also learn when to add -ed and -ing.
Our Valentine Party will be this Thursday, Feb. 11. The children will be decorating their own valentines cards on party day. We will also play several games and sing songs such as A-Tisket, A-Tasket and "The More We Get Together".
Please send Valentines to exchange at our party on Thursday. Be sure to sign-up in the hall to bring something for our Valentine Party.

Our letter of the week is "h". Some of the students will be tracing and writing lowercase "h" in D'Nealian. Other students will be working on matching pictures that end with "sw", "sp" and "sk". They will be learning about plural nouns and review the sound for long "i".
Please bring 3 items with texture by Wednesday if you have not already brought them to school. Someof the students have shared their items in circle and will be gluing them on the poster as a class on Thursday.
The children really enjoyed Dr. Flint's visits our class last week. She brought a Winter Wren's nest and speckled egg for us to examine, and she shared a wonderful story about finding the nest in her yard.

We will be making a texture collage this Thursday. Please bring 3 items with texture to share with the class by Thursday. We will be gluing the items on the poster.
We are continuing to paint the animals that live in the Texas State Parks. The children will be playing a matching game in Science Center that shows all of the Western Animals such as the coyote.
