September 14-17

In Science we will be learning about the difference between a vertebrate and invertebrate. In Science Center the children will be sorting animal manipulatives into these categories. We will be reading about Land Invertebrates such as Insects. We will also be learning about Mammals.
In Math we will be doing activities using the words top, middle and bottom. Some students will be sorting things that go "up" and "down" or "over" and "under" while others will be sorting things from smallest to largest.
In Music we will introduce the harp to the children as they learn to play the basic scale. We will also be alternating bilateral movements as we learn the song "Up Went the Spider."
In Bible we will be using watercolors to paint the story about the habit of attention. We will also read about what God created on Day One in the Bible and learn Creation songs.
Some of the students will be practicing word families such as "at" and "an" or "op" and "og" while others work on tracing and writing their lowercase letters "a" and "o". The students who have mastered the short vowel sounds will be learning the "ai" and "ay" words.
Please send a snack for snack time each morning. Be sure to label the bag with the students name so we will know whom it belongs to. Encourage your child to form the habit of placing their snack item in the brown basket by the door each morning.
Our field trip to the River Legacy Science Center is on Thursday, September 24. Please send $10.00 by this Thursday for your child to attend. There will be a Permission form in the hall for parents to sign. Let me know if you will be attending the field trip.

September 8-10

Weekly Highlights:In Music we will be singing the "Johnny Appleseed" song and Round the Apple Tree".
In Bible we will be learning about the habit of attention. In Math some students will be learning the concept of "inside" and "outside", and others will be learning how to sort different kinds of manipulatives.
Phonemic Awareness: Some of the students will be reviewing words with the short "a" sound while others will be working on long "a" words.
Science and Social Studies: We will be learning about different kinds and colors of apples this month. We will be reading the first story called "Alone in the Woods" from Johnny Appleseed. The students will make their own Johnny Appleseed puppet and create a book called All About Apples.
This week we will talk about Living and Nonliving things and play and Bingo game. We will also color our own Living and Nonliving Montessori nomenclature cards.
Upcoming Events: We are planning a field trip to River Legacy Living Science Center on Thursday, September 24 at 12:00. There will be centers to explore and a guided hike. The cost is $10 per child. Please let me know if you would like to attend. There will be a sign up sheet posted in the hall.
Classroom Reminders: Please send an individual snack for snack time each day. Be sure to mark it with your child's name and place it in the collection basket just inside the classroom door. They may also bring a water bottle to keep in the classroom. Students need to bring a backpack to school each day as well as a change of clothes in case of a spill or accident. A note will be sent out about our daily hot lunches that will be offered starting next week. You may also choose to bring your lunch to school.
