Oct. 13-15

Our Fall Party is on Wednesday, Oct. 28. There will be sign up sheet in the hall. The children may come to school in costume (a Fairy Tale or Nursery Rhyme costume would be great).
In Music we will practice our body parts and listening skills while moving to the song "Body Talk" and "Can't Sit Still".
In Bible we will read about Day 5 and add fish and birds to our Creation book. We will also practice our Day 1-7 song.
In Science we will be learning the different kinds of reptiles. We will talk about the turtle life cycle and read facts about the iguana, snake, alligator and lizard.
In nature study we will collect different sizes of acorns. We will talk about the Oak tree that is growing from the acorn we planted last year. We will plant broccoli and and swiss chard in the garden.
We will be starting a new Unit on Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes. This week we will be reading Snow White and narrating the story. We will also read Little Red Riding Hood and Jack Be Nimble.
Some of the students will be learning the short "u" sound while others will read The Big Hit short "i" book or the Cat book with "ap" words.
Other students will be reviewing the "igh" words and short "o". They will be learning the vowel digraph "oa" and dipthongs "oi" and "ow" as in cow. We will also go over "ow" as in bow. Please be practicing these sounds at home.
Our field trip to Mainstay Farms will be Thursday, Oct. 29. We will leave at 9:30. Please return the permission slip attached. The cost is $7 per person. Please let us know if you will be able to attend.

Oct. 5-8

The children enjoyed visiting the Nature Room with all the new animals. They all took turns feeding the tortoise lettuce. We also observed the guinea pigs and hermit crab.
In Music we will be moving like the wind to Mozart's Symphony in G major. We will also use hula hoops in creative movement with music by Hap Palmer and Raffi.
In Bible we will watercolor The Beginning book and read about Day 4. We will also read from the Beginner's Bible.
Some of the children will be reading short "o" words from Mox's Shop as well as tracing and writing lowercase "e" and "u". Other Students will be reading The Tin Man while reviewing short "i". They will also begin learning consonant blends bl, cl, fl, and gl in their Explode the Code workbook.
In Math some of the students will be ordering things from smallest to largest using numbers. Other students will be ordering things from shortest to tallest. Please practice counting from 1-100 at home.
School will be closed next Monday, October 12 for Columbus Day.

Sept. 28-Oct. 1

In Music we will be singing "Down By the Bay", "Baby Beluga", and "Apples and Bananas" with instruments.
In Bible we will collect flowers and grass for our Creation book and sing the Creation song.
We will be reading about whales, sharks, and fish. We will learn that a whale is a mammal and coloor the lifecycle of the salmon.
In Social Studies we will read"Johnny and the Wolf" from the Johnny Appleseed book.
We will read The Fisherman and His Wife and make a magic fish. Some of the students will be learning short vowel sounds while others will be learning "ie" as in tie and "igh" as in high.
Some of the students will be comparing objects and pictures that are the same or different while others will be learning the concept of more than and less than. We will be going to Mainstay Farms on Thursday, October 29. This will be our Fall Party. Students will need to wear a Flint Academy shirt. Jennifer will be sending an order in on Wednesday. The shirts are $10.00. Please return your order form by Wednesday if you don't already own a school shirt.

Sept. 21-24

In Music we will swim like fish to Mozart's String Quartet No. 17.
In Bible we will paint a Day 2 page for our Creation book and observe the clouds and sky in the garden.
In Science we will read about the Ocean Habitat. We will learn that a crab, shrimp, and lobster are called Arthropods. We will also learn that starfish, urchins, and sand dollars are all Echnoderms. The children will watercolor a jellyfish and begin working on their own ocean nomenclature cards. We will read and narrate about sea stars and jellyfish in our Nature Readers.
In Social Studies we will read "The Appleseed Man" from the Johnny Applessed book.
Some of the Students will be finding things that are the same or things that are different. Others will use manipulatives to learn the concept of "on" and "off". We will also review top, middle, and bottom.
Some of the students will be learning words that start with the short "i" sound. They will read words that end with "ick" and "ig". Other students will learn and compare words that are spelled with "ea" and "ee".
Our field trip is this Thursday, Sept. 24. Please send a car seat or booster seat for your child (state law requires this for children 8 and under). We will eat lunch in the cafeteria before leaving. Please meet at the school at 11:30 if you will be accompanying us.
